15 killed as boat carrying 32 Indian tourists capsizes near Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island: Report

At least 15 people – two women and 13 men – died when a tourist boat carrying 36 people, including several Indian nationals, capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam on Saturday, July 11, according to VnExpress International.

The speedboat capsized around 400 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai while travelling from Hon May Rut to An Thoi Port. All those on board had been brought ashore later, with 21 people surviving while 15 others confirmed dead.

According to the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, local authorities have initiated a search and rescue operation.
In a post on X, the embassy stated that efforts were underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. It said the accident occurred a few hours earlier while officials worked to ascertain the exact details of the incident.

“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago. Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing,” it said.

The Indian Embassy said it has established dedicated control rooms in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist affected families and respond to queries related to the incident.

“In order to provide information and assistance to affected families, a Control Room at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City has been setup which can be reached at: +84 36 281 7930, +84 91 552 37 14 and +84 33 452 0414. A control room has been established in Hanoi and can be reached at +84 91 308 9165. We are available for any assistance and queries,” the post further read.

The embassy said it remains available to provide assistance and information to affected families.

The latest accident follows another boating tragedy in July 2025, when a tourist vessel carrying 48 people, including at least 20 children, overturned in Ha Long Bay during severe weather, killing at least 35 passengers.
