New Zealand head coach Barren Bazeley has explained why his team suffered a 3-1 defeat against Egypt in their 2026 FIFA World Cup encounter.
Bazeley said Egypt’s improved intensity after the break made the difference, as New Zealand failed to maintain the level they showed during the opening half.
The Pharaohs secured victory through goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet.
Egypt changed the pace after halftime
Speaking after the match, Bazeley admitted his team performed strongly in the first half and controlled important parts of the game.
He said New Zealand created opportunities and looked comfortable before Egypt returned from the break with a stronger approach.
“We were so good in the first half. We dominated possession and created a lot of chances,” Bazeley said.
However, he explained that his players struggled to match Egypt’s increased tempo in the second half.
“Egypt upped the tempo and we couldn’t replicate what we were doing so well in the first half,” he added.
New Zealand face crucial final match
The result leaves New Zealand at the bottom of Group G with one point from two matches.
Despite the setback, Bazeley believes his team still has an opportunity to create history if they can defeat Belgium in their final group game.
“We’re still one game away from making history. We know we have to beat Belgium now,” he said.
