Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has reported an alleged attack on its students after claims that soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, invaded some student hostels.
The incident reportedly happened on Monday evening, with students alleging that they were assaulted and had their mobile phones and electronic devices taken away.
The university said it has formally informed the military authorities about the development.
Vice-Chancellor visits affected students
UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, visited some of the affected hostels to assess the situation and speak with students.
He said the institution was concerned by the allegations and had contacted the management of the Army Depot over the matter.
Adebooye noted that the close location of the military facility to the university was expected to provide security support for the campus community.
Students allege assault and missing devices
According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, preliminary findings showed that more than 20 students had reported being affected by the incident.
He said students alleged that both male and female students were assaulted during the operation, while more than 60 phones and other electronic devices were reportedly taken.
Some female students also made allegations of inappropriate treatment during the incident.
Investigation ongoing
The university said discussions with the Nigerian Army were continuing as authorities work to establish what happened.
Adesoji confirmed that some individuals linked to the allegations had been identified and brought to the university for further discussions.
He also said reports of an alleged rape had not been confirmed because no identified victim had formally reported the claim.
The institution said it would continue investigating all complaints from students.
