The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended lectures and practical classes every Wednesday as part of preparations for the 28th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) scheduled for 2026.
The decision is aimed at giving student-athletes enough time to train and prepare ahead of the major university sporting event.
University Targets Strong Performance
Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof Offiong Offiong, announced the adjustment during a press briefing on the institution’s readiness to host NUGA for the first time since 1990.
He explained that the university is not only focused on hosting a successful competition but also hopes to compete strongly for medals.
Thousands Expected for NUGA 2026
According to the university management, more than 50 public and private universities have shown interest in participating.
Over 50,000 athletes, officials and supporters are expected to gather in Calabar for the competition.
Participants will compete across 28 sporting events during the games.
Sports Training Gets Priority
The Vice Chancellor said NUGA preparations have been integrated into the school calendar to support student-athletes.
He added that the Wednesday lecture suspension will allow athletes to dedicate more time to training without affecting their academic commitments.
New Sports Facilities Underway
UNICAL is also developing a modern sports complex ahead of the event.
The university acknowledged the support of the Cross River State Government, TETFund and other stakeholders in ensuring the competition is successful.
The institution assured participants and visitors that it is ready to deliver a memorable NUGA 2026 experience.
