The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday in observance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day holiday.
The temporary closure, the mission said, is in recognition of the national celebration, as well as Nigeria’s observance of Democracy Day, which commemorates the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999
The announcement, made on Thursday, is to inform the public of the suspension of routine consular services during the period.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday in observance of the Democracy Day holiday,” officials confirmed, adding that normal operations will resume after the holiday.
The missions noted that while administrative and consular services will be unavailable, emergency assistance for U.S. citizens in Nigeria will remain operational throughout the holiday.
Routine visa and consular appointments scheduled for the day will be rescheduled, with applicants advised to monitor official communication channels for updates.
Democracy Day is observed annually in Nigeria to mark the return to democratic rule in 1999, a milestone widely regarded as significant in the country’s political development.
The U.S. missions reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and supporting democratic governance in Nigeria.
