The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day, a U.S. federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States.
The closure will affect routine consular services, which are expected to resume after the holiday.
The mission confirmed the observance on Thursday, noting that Juneteenth is now an established part of the U.S. federal holiday calendar and is also observed by American missions abroad.
“Juneteenth is a pivotal moment in America’s history, reflecting values of freedom, equality, and justice. In observance of this day, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026,” it stated.
The Embassy advised applicants and visitors to plan accordingly, while stressing that emergency services will remain available during the period of closure.
It added that the observance reflects America’s commitment to honoring its history while maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Nigeria.
