Business mogul and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, has reflected on the remarkable rise of Heirs Insurance Group, describing its journey from an eight-year licensing struggle to one of Africa’s fastest-growing insurance companies as proof that resilience, vision and execution can transform industries.
Speaking as Heirs Insurance marked its fifth anniversary, Elumelu revealed that the company’s story began long before its official launch in 2020. He disclosed that it took eight years of persistence, regulatory engagement and unwavering belief before the group finally secured the licences required to commence operations.
According to him, despite receiving only approval-in-principle at the time, the company proceeded to build its team and invest in the infrastructure needed to deliver a world-class insurance business, convinced that it could redefine customer experience and deepen financial inclusion across Nigeria.
Five years later, that conviction has translated into impressive results.
Today, Heirs Insurance serves nearly two million customers, has emerged as a leading force in Nigeria’s insurance sector and is driving innovation through digital platforms that make insurance more accessible to millions of Nigerians.
The group’s rapid growth recently earned it a place among the Financial Times’ Fastest-Growing Companies in Africa, a milestone Elumelu described as validation of the dedication, professionalism and commitment of the company’s workforce.
“What gives me the greatest satisfaction is the impact,” Elumelu said, noting that the company continues to invest in people, communities and initiatives that create long-term value.
He stressed that the eight-year journey to obtaining operational licences taught a critical lesson: enduring institutions are built through patience, perseverance and an unwavering belief in possibility.
“Heirs Insurance is proof that when conviction is matched with execution, African businesses can create both economic prosperity and social value,” he said.
Elumelu congratulated the Board, management and staff of the company, particularly the leadership teams headed by Niyi Onifade of Heirs Life Insurance and Wole Fayemi of Heirs General Insurance, for turning a bold vision into a thriving enterprise.
As the company celebrates five years of operations, Elumelu said the anniversary represents more than a corporate milestone.
