President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening maritime security with the commissioning of three new Nigerian Navy vessels, a move expected to enhance the country’s capacity to combat maritime crimes and protect its territorial waters.
The vessels, NNS Mambila, NNS Gurara, and NNS Oloibiri, were unveiled during the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos, where the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to recapitalising the Navy and promoting indigenous shipbuilding capacity.
Speaking at the event on Monday, Tinubu said the commissioning of the vessels reflects the government’s determination to equip the Navy with the resources needed to combat maritime crimes, protect critical national assets, and maintain security within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
“Our unwavering commitment to the recapitalisation of the Nigerian Navy is further demonstrated today through the commissioning of three new vessels. As we continue to promote indigenous shipbuilding capacity and provide strategic support, the nation looks forward to greater strides in ensuring maritime security,” he said.
The President praised the Navy for its role in combating piracy, crude oil theft and other maritime crimes, noting that its operations have contributed significantly to national economic stability.
“This milestone offers us a moment not only for celebration but for reflection on a remarkable journey that has transformed a modest force into a formidable maritime power,” Tinubu said. “The Nigerian Navy has evolved into a modern, sophisticated naval force and an anchor of stability for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.”
He also commended naval personnel for their contributions to counterterrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the country, describing the Navy as “an indispensable pillar of both national and regional security.”
Tinubu urged officers and ratings to sustain professionalism and improve operational effectiveness, stressing that Nigeria’s maritime domain remains critical to the nation’s economy and global trade.
“You have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crimes. I charge you to continue to deepen your operational capability in safeguarding our waters,” he added.
The President further thanked international partners for supporting maritime security efforts in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that such cooperation remains vital to regional stability.
