President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the inter-ministerial committee (IMC) set up to organise this year’s national celebrations in Abuja.
According to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the presidential speech will be one of the major highlights of the commemorative events approved by the federal government.
Akume formally inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex, urging members to immediately commence preparations given the limited time before the anniversary.
He noted that Democracy Day remains a significant moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and honour those who fought for the restoration of civilian rule.
He specifically paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, including the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic movement.
Events Line-Up for Democracy Day 2026
The federal government has outlined a series of activities leading up to June 12, designed to commemorate the anniversary and highlight democratic progress.
These include a world press conference scheduled for June 4, a special Juma’at prayer on June 5, and an interdenominational church service on June 7.
A public lecture focused on democracy will hold on June 9, followed by youth and women-focused programmes on June 10.
The celebrations will culminate in the presidential address to the National Assembly and a Democracy Day gala night on June 12.
