THE Taraba State Judiciary has commenced training of its high court judges on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judicial process.
Justice Joel Agya, Chief Judge of the state, while declaring the two- day workshop open on Friday in Jalingo, said that AI literacy and its responsible application in Judicial process was crucial in justice delivery.
Agya described the technology as the most transformative developments of the time, nothing that the world was experiencing an unprecedented technological revolution.
“Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping the way institutions operate, decisions are
made, and services are delivered. The justice sector is not immune to these
developments.
‘Across jurisdictions, courts and judicial institutions are increasingly
examining how emerging technologies can enhance efficiency, improve access to
justice, strengthen legal research, and support judicial administration.
‘However, as judicial officers entrusted with the sacred duty of dispensing
justice, we must approach these innovations with caution, wisdom, and a firm
commitment to the core values of judicial independence, impartiality, integrity,
accountability, and fairness.
‘While Artificial Intelligence presents significant opportunities, it also raises important ethical, legal, and practical concerns relating to accuracy, confidentiality, transparency, bias, and judicial responsibility.
“This workshop has therefore been carefully designed to equip judges of the
Taraba high courts with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the
capabilities and limitations of AI and to apply it responsibly within the judicial process.
‘The objective is not to replace judicial reasoning or discretion, but to enhance our understanding of technological tools that may assist us in the performance of our duties, while preserving the human judgment that remains at the heart of justice delivery,” Agya said.
In his remarks, Mr Segun Meleki, Managing Director, Lex decipher Tech Ltd, who is the resource person, commended the leadership of the state judiciary for having interest in the application of AI in it’s judicial process.
Meleki said that the technology had enormous opportunities and challenges but it would surely enhance justice delivery by speeding up administration of justice.
