The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to democratic principles, constitutional governance and credible elections as the nation marks Democracy Day.
Adebayo made the appeal in a statement commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the most significant events in Nigeria’s democratic history.
According to him, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and national heroes must continue to inspire efforts to strengthen democratic institutions across the country.
June 12 Remains a Symbol of Democratic Struggle
The SDP flagbearer described June 12 as a defining chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution and a reminder of the determination of citizens who fought for democratic governance.
He noted that the election, won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, demonstrated the ability of Nigerians to unite beyond ethnic, religious and regional differences in pursuit of a common national goal.
According to Adebayo, the events that followed the annulment of the election remain one of the most important lessons in the country’s democratic journey.
Tribute to Abiola and Democracy Activists
Adebayo paid tribute to Chief MKO Abiola, his wife, the late Kudirat Abiola, and countless Nigerians who suffered persecution during the struggle to restore democratic rule.

The SDP candidate also acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari for officially recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Despite more than two decades of uninterrupted civilian rule, Adebayo expressed concern that some democratic shortcomings continue to persist.
