A major international study has found that even low levels of alcohol consumption—potentially as little as one drink per day—may increase the risk of developing cancer, intensifying global concerns over the long-term health consequences of alcohol use
The findings, published in Nature Health, drew on an extensive review of 843 scientific studies involving millions of participants worldwide.
The research assessed the relationship between alcohol consumption and 20 major disease categories, including various cancers, liver disease, cardiovascular conditions, infections, and neurological disorders.
Researchers concluded that alcohol is linked to a wide range of serious health risks and cautioned that there may be no completely safe level of consumption when it comes specifically to cancer risk.
The study reaffirmed that alcohol is officially classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, placing it in the same highest-risk category as tobacco and asbestos due to strong evidence of its cancer-causing effects in humans.
According to the analysis, cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum, breast, and pancreas were all significantly associated with alcohol use, many of which are known for high mortality rates and difficult treatment outcomes.

One of the most striking findings showed that consuming about two alcoholic drinks daily—roughly 20 grams of alcohol—was associated with a 56 percent higher risk of certain pharyngeal cancers compared to non-drinkers.
At higher levels of consumption, the risk increased sharply, with some cancer risks more than tripling. Importantly, the researchers stressed that elevated cancer risk was not limited to heavy drinkers, as even low-to-moderate intake showed measurable associations with increased cancer incidence.
Beyond cancer, the study identified significant harm across multiple organ systems. Moderate to high alcohol intake was linked to more than double the risk of liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease, both of which can lead to liver failure.
Alcohol use was also strongly associated with pancreatitis, a serious and potentially fatal inflammation of the pancreas, as well as atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular complications.
At higher consumption levels, alcohol was found to elevate risks across nearly every major disease category examined in the analysis.
While some earlier research has suggested that light drinking may offer limited protection against conditions such as heart disease, dementia, or diabetes, the authors noted that such findings remain uncertain and may be influenced by lifestyle and demographic differences between drinkers and non-drinkers.
The study emphasized that any potential benefits disappear as consumption increases, while risks—particularly cancer—continue to rise steadily with intake.
Researchers also highlighted a significant gap in public awareness about alcohol-related cancer risks. While the link between smoking and cancer is widely recognized, they noted that many people remain unaware that alcohol is also a direct carcinogen.
They called for stronger public health messaging, clearer warning labels on alcoholic beverages, and updated national guidelines to better communicate the risks.
The authors concluded that although individual risk may vary depending on age, genetics, and drinking patterns, the overall scientific evidence is consistent: increasing alcohol consumption raises the likelihood of serious diseases, especially cancer.
For millions who view alcohol as a routine part of daily life, the study delivers a stark warning—there may be no truly safe level of drinking when it comes to cancer risk, and even moderate consumption could carry long-term health consequences.
