A gang of armed robbers have killed a serving police officer and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sunday Idakwo, during an attack on a community in Kogi state.
Idakwo, of the Safer Highway Patrol Unit of the Federal Capital Territory, was said to be carrying out official duties on a major highway patrol operation when assailants attacked and killed him
The incident which occurred early Wednesday along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway, a strategic corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory with several parts of the country, led to a senior police source described the incident as a disturbing loss, saying, “ASP Sunday Idakwo was performing his lawful duties when he came under attack by suspected armed robbers.
“His death is a painful setback and a reminder of the risks security personnel face daily.”
According to information obtained from a police source, the exact circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, but disclosed that investigation has begun in the matter.
Meanwhile, the officer’s death has further heightened concerns about the safety of motorists and security operatives on key inter-state routes
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Nigeria Police Force were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report as calls and a text message sent to the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, were not answered.
