The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations that some of its officers, including ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey, extorted money from members of the public while on official duty, following a viral video circulating on social media.
The incident, said to have occurred in Rivers State, prompted the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, to order the immediate arrest, detention, and investigation of the officers involved.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the Command said it views the allegations with “utmost seriousness,” noting that such conduct is contrary to the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command said the decision to act swiftly was aimed at reinforcing integrity, accountability, and public trust in policing.
“The Commissioner of Police reiterates that extortion, illegal collection of money, and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement read.
It added that the Command remains committed to accountability, discipline, and respect for human rights.
Adepoju assured that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and impartial, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Act.
He also commended members of the public for speaking out against misconduct and encouraged continued reporting through official complaint channels.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professional policing and quality service delivery, stressing that its goal is to strengthen public confidence and ensure officers uphold integrity and fairness across Rivers State.
