Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Spanish international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth an initial €55 million, marking the club’s first major acquisition of the summer transfer window.
While the Spanish giants did not disclose the financial details of the transfer, reports indicate that the agreement includes a guaranteed fee of €55 million, with an additional €5 million potentially payable through performance-related add-ons.
The arrival of the 27-year-old left-back signals the beginning of an ambitious rebuilding project at the Santiago Bernabéu under newly appointed manager José Mourinho, who recently returned for a second spell at the club following the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa.
Sources close to the negotiations revealed that Mourinho played a significant role in convincing Cucurella to make the move back to Spain. The defender is currently with the Spanish national team in the United States, where he is preparing for Spain’s World Cup opening match against Cabo Verde in Atlanta.
Cucurella’s signing is expected to be the first of several high-profile additions for Madrid this summer. Reports suggest the club has already reached agreements to bring in Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva once their contracts expire later this month.
In addition, Madrid are reportedly planning to activate a €20 million release clause to secure the services of Inter Milan and Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries as they seek to strengthen multiple areas of the squad ahead of the new season.

For Cucurella, the transfer represents a long-awaited return to Spanish football after several successful years in England. The defender had attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in recent months.
Barcelona, where Cucurella began his football journey through the famous La Masia academy, reportedly explored the possibility of bringing him back to the club. However, the Catalan side did not pursue negotiations further as they prioritised reinforcements in other positions.
Atlético Madrid were believed to have shown more concrete interest, but Real Madrid moved decisively in recent days to secure the player’s signature, particularly after Mourinho’s appointment.
The transfer is likely to add extra intrigue to future El Clásico encounters given Cucurella’s roots at Barcelona. Born in Catalonia, he progressed through Barça’s youth ranks and made a senior appearance in the Copa del Rey during the 2017-18 season before embarking on loan spells with Eibar and Getafe.
His performances at Getafe earned him a permanent move before he later joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion. Chelsea subsequently signed him in 2022 in a deal worth approximately €65 million.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella established himself as one of the club’s most reliable defenders, making 163 appearances and helping the Blues win both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, the defender publicly expressed frustration over Chelsea’s direction during the past season. Following the club’s UEFA Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain, he criticised the decision to part ways with manager Enzo Maresca and questioned the club’s long-term strategy.
Cucurella admitted that while Chelsea’s focus on recruiting young talents may benefit the future, it had become increasingly difficult for players eager to compete for major honours in the present.
With his future now settled, the defender can turn his full attention to Spain’s World Cup campaign. Cucurella remains one of coach Luis de la Fuente’s most trusted players and is expected to continue as the national team’s first-choice left-back.
