Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu promised not to seek a second term if he failed to improve electricity supply in Nigeria.
Onanuga said the president’s comments during the 2022 election campaign were misunderstood and taken out of context.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News, he explained that Tinubu’s statement about improving power supply was not a binding decision to abandon a re-election ambition.
Onanuga highlights power sector reforms
The presidential aide said Tinubu’s administration has taken steps to address challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector since taking office.
He pointed to the Electricity Act, which allows states to participate in electricity generation, transmission and distribution as part of efforts to reform the sector.
Onanuga also mentioned government initiatives aimed at reducing estimated billing through increased access to electricity meters.
Power challenges remain
While acknowledging that electricity supply has not yet reached the level expected by Nigerians, Onanuga said the administration is working to resolve long-standing problems affecting the sector.
He identified issues such as gas supply limitations, unpaid debts to gas providers and outdated transmission infrastructure as some of the major challenges slowing progress.
According to him, the Federal Government remains committed to improving power generation and distribution across the country.
