The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation to identify the suspected gunmen who attacked and shot the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila.
The probe follows the incident, which occurred at about 9:50 p.m. around the MDS area of Osogbo, near the Osogbo Community Bank axis, throwing the area into panic as gunshots rang out.
It was gathered that the assailants opened fire on Ajibola’s blue Toyota Corolla while pursuing the vehicle in what appeared to be a coordinated attack.
The party chairman and his associate, who were in transit at the time, reportedly escaped and sought refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters before the attackers fled the scene.
Ajibola was later rushed to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the attack.
Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the incident as unfortunate and called for a thorough investigation, insisting that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command has commenced an investigation into the attack, assuring that no effort would be spared in tracking down and prosecuting those responsible.
He added that medical personnel confirmed Ajibola is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment, while exhibits recovered from the scene are undergoing forensic analysis.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a high-level investigation, directing all relevant units to deploy resources to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of the suspects.
