The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across the 33 Local Government Areas of the state to an increased risk of flash floods in June 2026, following a High Impact-Based Forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, warning that heavy thunderstorms and intense surface runoff could overwhelm drainage systems in several communities.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this in Ibadan on Monday, noting that the state government had intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of flooding.
He called on residents to support the initiative by ensuring that drains, gutters, and waterways around their homes and communities are kept free of plastic waste, silt, and other materials that could obstruct the free flow of water.
Aderinto also advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, particularly at night, warning that flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and endanger lives.
He cautioned individuals and developers against unauthorised dredging or construction activities that could alter natural water channels or block drainage paths, stressing that such actions violate the state’s environmental laws and would attract sanctions.
The commissioner further urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures by securing lives and property, including elevating household items, important documents, and electrical appliances above floor level.
