Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has raised questions over Victor Osimhen’s suitability to captain Nigeria’s national team, despite praising the striker’s importance and achievements with the country.
Adepoju said football ability alone is not enough to lead a team, stressing that a captain must also demonstrate discipline, emotional control and the ability to unite teammates.
The discussion comes after changes in the Super Eagles leadership structure following the departure of long-time captains William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa from international football.
Ndidi gets captaincy role
Following the leadership transition, head coach Eric Chelle appointed Wilfred Ndidi as the team’s permanent captain.
Osimhen and Moses Simon were named vice-captains, while the Galatasaray striker has taken responsibility as captain in matches when Ndidi was unavailable.
Despite Osimhen’s influence on and off the pitch, Adepoju believes leadership requires additional qualities beyond performance.
Former midfielder highlights discipline
Adepoju pointed to a reported disagreement involving Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, saying such situations require better emotional management from senior players.
He argued that disagreements between teammates should be handled away from the pitch to avoid affecting the team.
According to him, players wearing the captain’s armband must serve as examples for younger footballers watching them.
Osimhen remains key Super Eagles figure
While questioning his captaincy credentials, Adepoju acknowledged Osimhen’s passion, determination and goal-scoring ability.
The striker remains one of Nigeria’s most important players since making his senior debut in 2017.
Osimhen has scored 35 goals in 46 appearances for the Super Eagles, placing him among Nigeria’s highest goal scorers of all time.
His international achievements include an AFCON bronze medal in 2019, a runners-up finish in 2023, and a strong performance at the 2025 tournament.
The 2023 African Footballer of the Year has also received major recognition for his club and country performances.
