THE Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving seafarers’ documentation and maritime digitalisation.
The commitment was reiterated during a four-day study visit by officials of the Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) to NIMASA.
The visit focused on strengthening regional collaboration and promoting globally compliant systems for seafarers’ certification and documentation.
NIMASA’s Executive Director, Operations, Mr. Fatai Adeyemi, represented the agency’s Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, during the engagement.
Adeyemi described the visit as evidence of growing cooperation between Nigeria and The Gambia in maritime administration.
He said the engagement provided opportunities for knowledge sharing and capacity development within Africa’s maritime sector.
According to him, NIMASA’s digitalisation efforts have improved the efficiency and credibility of Nigeria’s seafarers’ certification processes.
“We are delighted to share our experiences in digitalising seafarers’ documentation and certification processes,” he said.

Adeyemi said such engagements strengthen regional cooperation and support a more competitive African maritime sector.
He attributed NIMASA’s progress to policy support from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
The executive director said the agency would continue promoting collaboration, capacity building and best practices across the continent.
During the visit, both administrations discussed procedures for issuing medical certificates and conducting professional examinations.
They also reviewed processes for issuing Certificates of Proficiency and enhancing international acceptance of certification systems.
Leader of the Gambian delegation, Mr. Falu Sey, commended NIMASA’s achievements in maritime development and digital transformation.
Sey, Manager of Ship Registry and Seafarers Affairs at GMA, said the visit provided valuable technical insights.
“We are returning home with valuable lessons and a commitment to implement the knowledge gained,” he said.
He noted that the experience would support efforts to strengthen maritime administration and service delivery in The Gambia.
The visit further reinforced NIMASA’s position as a leading maritime institution in Africa.
It also highlighted the agency’s commitment to digital transformation, regional cooperation and global best practices in maritime administration.
