The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with 186,291 candidates from across Nigeria, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and five foreign countries participating in the examination conducted between April 20 and April 30, 2026.
The release was approved following the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, where stakeholders reviewed the conduct of the examination and expressed satisfaction with the processes leading to the compilation and publication of the results.
In a statement issued on its social media platforms on Thursday, NECO’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, said candidates who sat for the examination were drawn from all 36 states of the federation, the FCT and five foreign countries.
He noted that the examination commenced on April 20 and was successfully concluded on April 30, 2026.
According to the council, the results were released after the Award Committee completed its review of the examination process and considered reports relating to the conduct, marking and processing of the exercise.
The committee subsequently approved the release of the results, paving the way for candidates to access their performance records.
Speaking during the meeting, the Chairperson of the Award Committee, Folake David, who represented the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, expressed satisfaction with the procedures adopted by the council and commended the successful completion of the examination and result-processing stages.
The meeting was attended by secondary school principals from different parts of the country, alongside members of NECO’s management team and other education stakeholders who participated in the deliberations leading to the approval of the results.
Meanwhile, the Award Committee has approved the timetable for the 2026 BECE Re-sit Examination, which is scheduled to hold on July 22 and July 23, 2026.
The re-sit examination will cover Mathematics and English Studies, two core subjects considered critical for progression into senior secondary education.
NECO explained that the re-sit examination is specifically designed for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies or both subjects.
The arrangement provides affected students with another opportunity to meet the minimum academic requirements needed for certification.
The council added that the exercise is intended to help candidates remedy outstanding deficiencies and obtain the qualifications required for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School One (SSS1), thereby enabling them to continue their education without repeating an entire academic year.
