The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has intensified its campaign against drug abuse and cultism, warning students about the dangers the twin vices pose to their future and the wider society.
The warning was delivered during a sensitisation programme held at Community Secondary School, Oruma, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, as part of the commission’s efforts to combat rising cases of illicit drug use and youth involvement in cult activities.
NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, urged students to resist peer pressure and avoid involvement in drugs and secret cult groups, stressing that such practices destroy ambitions, endanger lives and offer no meaningful future.
Represented by the Director of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Dr. Goddy Ogedegbe, Ogbuku reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to education and human capital development, saying the NDDC remains determined to build a Niger Delta free from drug abuse and cultism.
The programme also featured contributions from security and anti-drug agencies. Assistant State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Bayelsa State, Mr. Godwin Erepa, highlighted the connection between drug abuse and cult-related violence, warning students against both practices.
Similarly, Inspector Iroro Ohwoharhoho of the Bayelsa State Police Command educated students on the legal consequences of cultism, noting that the offence carries severe penalties, including imprisonment.
The Principal of Community Secondary School, Oruma, Mr. Sunny-Obi Julius, commended the NDDC for bringing the campaign to the school and encouraged students to stay away from cultism and drug abuse.
