The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has explained its decision to offer Peter Obi the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the former Labour Party presidential candidate did not pay any money for the nomination.
The party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, made the statement during an NDC stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday, where he addressed questions surrounding Obi’s involvement with the party.
According to Dickson, the NDC also gave Obi the freedom to select his running mate without interference from the party leadership.
Dickson speaks on Obi supporters’ expectations
The former governor questioned what more supporters of Obi, popularly known as the Obidients, expected from the party after the steps taken to accommodate the former Anambra State governor.
Dickson maintained that the party’s decision was aimed at building cooperation ahead of the 2027 election.
He said the focus should now shift towards working together and preparing for success at the polls.
NDC seeks unity ahead of 2027 election
The NDC leader said neither he nor the party’s national chairman requested payment from Obi before granting him the presidential nomination.
He added that the party remains open to collaboration as political activities continue ahead of the next election cycle.
The statement comes as political parties and potential candidates begin positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
