The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reshaped its political arrangement in Kano State after replacing several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction, in what appears to be a major adjustment to enforce its internal power-sharing understanding.
The changes were contained in a document signed by the State Chairman, Hussaini Mairiga, and communicated on Monday to key stakeholders, including national leader Seriake Dickson, Kwankwasiyya leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Rabi’u Sabo Bakinzuwo, reflecting the sensitivity and wide-reaching implications of the decision.
Party officials said the reshuffle was aimed at enforcing a 60–40 power-sharing agreement between the party’s main structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc, which had guided earlier negotiations over the distribution of elective positions, but which the leadership now says was not properly reflected in the initial candidate list.
Under the revised arrangement, Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani was approved for Kumbotso Federal Constituency, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale, while adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.
Explaining the development, party spokesperson Comrade Ibrahim Waya said there was a prior understanding on a 60–40 sharing formula between the party leadership and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, adding that the urgent review was necessary to prevent a breakdown of order within the party and to preserve the stability of the alliance.
The NDC leadership maintained that the earlier list did not accurately reflect the agreed formula, a situation which it said triggered internal disagreements and necessitated the latest corrections to restore balance.
The development is expected to further heighten political tension within the alliance as both blocs continue negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections, underscoring the delicate and often contested nature of power-sharing politics in Kano State.
