The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of its vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as its deputy governorship candidate for Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.
The announcement was made on Monday in Kano during the party’s official presentation of its governorship ticket, where Mustapha was introduced as running mate to the NDC governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
The development, confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, marks a key step in the party’s preparations for the forthcoming polls.
Mustapha, who previously served as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, recently resigned from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s cabinet following political realignments within the state.
His resignation came amid growing political tensions between Governor Yusuf and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, with Mustapha aligning with his father’s political bloc.
Party officials said his selection reflects both his political background and the confidence in his ability to mobilise grassroots support across Kano State.
His emergence is also seen as a strategic move by the NDC to strengthen its electoral chances in a key battleground state ahead of 2027.
The announcement has further intensified discussions around political succession and the influence of political families in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
