The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has dismissed reports suggesting that its presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the party.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said there was no point where the former Kano State governor indicated plans to quit the NDC.
He described the reports as speculation aimed at creating a negative impression about the party.
Party blames political opponents
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Director said the claims were being promoted by people who do not want the party to succeed.
According to him, Kwankwaso remains committed to the NDC and the party’s political plans ahead of the 2027 general election.
He also alleged that some political interests were behind attempts to weaken the party through such reports.
Background to the controversy
The clarification follows reports that Kwankwaso was unhappy after some candidates linked to his Kwankwasiyya movement were replaced in Kano State.
The changes reportedly followed disagreements over a power-sharing arrangement between the existing NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
Earlier reports had claimed the former Kano governor could consider leaving the party if the situation was not resolved.
NDC maintains unity ahead of elections
The party has continued to insist that internal discussions are normal within political organisations and that members remain focused on strengthening the party.
The NDC leadership said it remains committed to working together ahead of the 2027 elections.
