The mother of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, Olufunmilayo Adelabu, has described the abduction of her daughter and grandsons as a heartbreaking experience that left her devastated and uncertain about their fate.
Adelabu expressed profound gratitude to God, security agencies, government officials, and members of the public who contributed to the successful rescue operation.
She disclosed this to journalists at her residence in the Challenge area of Ibadan on Sunday after the victims were rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force yesterday.
The victims, Olaide Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, were kidnapped at about 7:30 a.m. on June 3, 2026, while she was taking the children to school. Their abduction threw the family into distress and sparked widespread concern.
Recalling the traumatic experience, Mrs. Adelabu said the news of the kidnapping shattered her, as no one could predict the outcome of such criminal acts.
“I was devastated when I heard about the abduction. At that moment, nobody could be certain of what would happen. We only prayed and hoped for their safe return,” she said.
The former minister’s mother expressed relief that her daughter and grandchildren had been reunited with the family unharmed, describing their rescue as a miracle.
She also revealed a striking coincidence, noting that a day before her daughter’s abduction, she had been praying for the safe return of victims of the recent Oriire kidnapping incident, unaware that her own family would soon face a similar ordeal.
Adelabu extended her sympathies to families whose loved ones remain in captivity, particularly victims of the Oriire abductions, and prayed for their safe return.
“I continue to pray for all those who are still being held by kidnappers. May they be reunited safely with their families, and may our country experience lasting peace and security,” she added.
The family also issued a statement thanking the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their swift intervention, as well as members of the public who offered prayers and support during the difficult period.
The abduction occurred amid growing concerns over insecurity in Oyo State following the recent kidnapping of scores of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that triggered public outrage and protests.
Following the kidnapping of his sister and her children, Governor Seyi Makinde visited Adebayo Adelabu on Friday and assured him that intensified efforts were underway to secure the victims’ release.
A source within the police disclosed that the rescue operation involved a gun battle between security operatives and the kidnappers. During the encounter, two suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while two firearms were recovered from the criminal gang.
The successful rescue has been welcomed by residents and stakeholders, who have renewed calls for stronger security measures to tackle the growing menace of kidnapping across the country.
