MOROCCAN journalist and human rights defender, Zakaria El Hamel, has been awarded the prestigious “NELSON MANDELA” Human Rights Award for its second edition.
The award is a major international recognition that elevates the profile of Moroccan civil society on the global stage.
The Scientific Committee of the “Peace, Freedom and Human Rights International Award” in Italy made the announced today in a release by Ilyas on behalf of Youth for Peace and Dialogue Between Cultures and sent to Realnews on Thursday, June 18.
“This distinguished accolade was granted through a joint decision by prominent European academic and philosophical institutions, including the Foundation for World Peace, the Léopold Sédar Senghor International Academy (Arcore, Italy), and the Academy of Philosophical Arts and Science (Bari, Italy), the release said.
According to the official decree issued by the awarding committee, this tribute comes in recognition of Mr. El Hamel’s tireless and unwavering commitment as the founder and president of the organization “Youth for Peace and Dialogue Between Cultures.”
He is being honored for his outstanding grassroots efforts in promoting a culture of peace, advocating for human rights, and educating youth on tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and mutual respect most notably through extensive campaigns teaching the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The official award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 19, 2026, at the historic Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari in Italy.
The high-profile event will be attended by institutional authorities, distinguished members of the global academic and cultural sectors, international civil society leaders, and representatives of the press.
Bearing the name of one of history’s greatest symbols of freedom and justice, Nelson Mandela, this international honor serves as a powerful testament to the impact of citizen diplomacy and grassroots action.
It highlights how local initiatives originating from the Kingdom of Morocco continue to build global bridges of understanding, celebrate diversity, and counter extremism.
