Minister Inaugurates Committee to Monitor Implementation of 2025 FG-ASUU Agreement
The Federal Government has inaugurated the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Agreement as part of efforts to ensure the full, timely and transparent implementation of the pact and sustain industrial harmony in the nation’s university system.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the move as a major milestone in consolidating stability within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
She said the committee was established to monitor compliance with the agreement, ensure adherence to agreed timelines and deliverables, and facilitate continuous engagement among stakeholders.
According to the minister, the successful conclusion of negotiations between the Federal Government and ASUU demonstrates the commitment of both parties to dialogue, mutual respect and sustainable reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s university system.
Also speaking at the event, Abel O. Enitan, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, described the inauguration as a significant step towards enhancing governance and accountability within the education sector.
He urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, objectivity and dedication to achieving the goals of the agreement.
Chairman of the committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, assured stakeholders of the committee’s commitment to transparency, diligence and effective oversight in carrying out its mandate.
On his part, ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, emphasized the importance of sustained engagement between the government and the union, calling for regular meetings to address emerging issues and strengthen mutual understanding.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the 2025 agreement and the promotion of lasting industrial peace across Nigerian universities.
The inauguration of the committee is expected to provide a structured mechanism for tracking progress on the agreement and addressing potential challenges before they escalate into industrial disputes.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade, on June 8, 2026.
