Major explosion at Ras Laffan industrial complex; Qatar Energy says 'operational incident'

A major incident took place at the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar in the late hours of Sunday, June 21, which resulted in an explosion and a fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility, state-owned QatarEnergy confirmed on its social media handles on “X”.

Calling the issue an “operational incident”, QatarEnergy added that the incident took place during the start-up of operations at Ras Laffan and emergency response teams were deployed immediately to control the fire, which is now under control.

The incident was also confirmed by Qatar’s interior ministry, attributing it to a technical malfunction during operations at a factory.
A number of injuries have also been reported, as per the ministry, but there have been no leaks and no threats to public safety. “The competent authorities are continuing to respond to the incident,” the Ministry’s statement read on “X”.

Why is Ras Laffan Important?

Ras Laffan handles approximately 77 to 80 million tonnes per annum of LNG exports. That is close to 20% of global LNG trade, with supplies primarily moving to Asia and Europe. Any disruption here has direct implications for global gas availability. The facility is also important as it not only produces LNG, but also products including urea, polymers, methanol and Aluminium.
The region was also a major target at the heights of the US-Iran war, which began earlier in the year, forcing QatarEnergy to declare a force majeure on some LNG contracts.

Reuters had reported on May 25, that the force majeure has now been extended till mid-August.

So far, the extent of the damage caused due to the fire has not been ascertained.

Timing Of The Accident

The incident also takes place amidst high level delegation talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland, in the presence of mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.

Amidst the talks, US President Donald Trump threatened to once again escalate attacks on Iran in case a deal was not made, causing the Iranian delegation to lodge a formal protest, according to State television.
