The Lagos State Police Command has commended residents for their vigilance after they exposed a 22-year-old man who allegedly impersonated a police officer using a stolen uniform and other official items.
According to the Command, the suspect, identified as Onipede Ojo, was apprehended after allegedly stealing a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card, and other personal belongings.
He was said to have worn the stolen police camouflage uniform in an attempt to pass himself off as a law enforcement officer.
However, his conduct reportedly raised suspicion among passersby, who observed that his behaviour and mannerisms did not match those of a genuine police officer.
Their suspicion led them to confront and question him, during which he was exposed as an impostor, and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the arrest yesterday, stated that the the suspect is currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing.
“He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation, and prosecuted in accordance with the law, as a deterrent to others who may engage in similar criminal conduct,” she said.
The Command praised the members of the public for their alertness and quick action, describing the incident as a demonstration of the effectiveness of the “See Something, Say Something” initiative.
It also appreciated residents for their proactive support and timely reporting of suspicious activities, noting that such collaboration remains essential to maintaining peace, safety, and security across the state.
However, the police strongly condemned any form of jungle justice, stressing that members of the public must not take the law into their own hands regardless of the offence involved.
The Command advised residents to always hand over suspected offenders to the police or other relevant law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety, the Command urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies by reporting suspicious persons and activities promptly.
