The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, saying the ongoing policy measures are aimed at strengthening democratic governance, expanding economic opportunities and restoring confidence in the country.
It stated that the 2026 celebration offered Nigerians another opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s pro-democracy heroes and recommit to the ideals of justice, freedom, national unity and progress.
The Chairman of the party, Cornelius Ojelabi, stated this on Friday during the Democracy Day celebration, marking the 27th anniversary of the country’s return to democratic system of governance.
Ojelabi explained that June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, describing the late Chief Moshood Abiola as the symbol of the democratic struggle, while also honouring the memory of his wife, Kudirat Abiola, and other activists, journalists, labour leaders, students and ordinary Nigerians who suffered persecution in the fight for democratic rule.
According to him, the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day by former President Muhammadu Buhari corrected a historical injustice and aligned the nation’s democratic celebration with the true symbol of the people’s mandate.
The Chairman, meanwhile, praised President Tinubu, whom it described as a foremost democrat and a key figure in the June 12 struggle, saying his administration is implementing bold reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen institutions, attract investment, and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
“Today, under his leadership and the Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is pursuing bold reforms aimed at strengthening institutions, expanding economic opportunities, restoring investor confidence, and laying the foundation for sustainable national growth and development,” he added.
Ojelabi noted that the state played a central role in the June 12 pro-democracy struggle and has remained a stronghold of progressive politics in the country.
According to him, Lagos continues to serve as a model of governance, innovation and development under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
While listing gains of the incumbent administration in transportation, infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, technology, environmental sustainability, youth empowerment and social inclusion as evidence of the Tinubu’s government performance, the chairman described the administration as progressive governance in the state.
He added that the APC remained committed to the protection of lives and property, promising continued support for security agencies and stronger measures to confront criminality and insecurity across the country.
While acknowledging the security challenges facing some parts of Nigeria, the chairman said development cannot thrive without peace and safety, adding that government at all levels must continue to protect citizens and safeguard communities.
However, he praised the growing strength of the APC in Lagos, saying the party’s grassroots structures remain vibrant and its acceptance among residents continues to rise.
Ojelabi urged members and supporters to remain united, disciplined and loyal to the ideals that have sustained the party over the years.
“As we commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, the party calls on all members, leaders, stakeholders, and supporters to continue to uphold the values of peace, unity, discipline, loyalty, and mutual respect that have sustained our success over the years,” the chairman added.
Ojelabi noted that the government’s achievements and organisational strength have made it a reference point for political success and governance, but warned that internal disagreements should not be allowed to weaken the party’s unity.
The Chairman urged party faithful to place the interests of the party and the people above personal ambition, stressing that its continued leadership in Lagos and at the federal level must be justified through performance, service and commitment to the public good.
