The senator representing Kebbi South, Garba Maidoki, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over allegation of persistent internal disputes among members of the ruling party.
Maidoki said his decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents and was driven by what he described as unresolved crises stemming from the APC’s internal processes.
The senator formally announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Senate President, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary session by the presiding officer.
According to him, the situation had made it necessary to seek a new political platform that better reflects the aspirations of the people he represents.
“There is a lingering internal crisis in the APC, especially arising from the Kebbi primary elections. After due consultation with my constituents, I have decided to defect to the ADC, which I believe aligns more with the interests of my district,” the senator stated.
The lawmaker, who maintained that his move was carefully considered and not taken lightly, stressed that the concerns raised by party members and supporters over the conduct of the primaries played a major role in shaping his decision.
The Guild reports that Maidoki currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation.
The senator is reported to be among APC lawmakers who were screened out during the party’s recent primary process, a development that has fueled dissatisfaction among some party members.
