The Katsina State Police Command has begun a statewide operation targeting vehicles operating without valid registration documents, as well as those using concealed, fake or improperly displayed number plates.
The command held that the exercise will focus on vehicular documentation regulations citing all unlawful practices by motorists, adding that the measure is aimed at improving vehicle identification, strengthening security surveillance and making it easier for law enforcement agencies to track and apprehend criminal suspects.
The information was passed in a statement issued on Thursday in by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, explaining that the growing misuse of registration plates has become a serious concern, noting that some criminal elements exploit hidden or fake number plates to avoid detection and frustrate investigations.
The security agency bemoaned the rate of crimes perpetrated with the use of conceal vehicular identification, declaring that proper vehicle identification remains a critical component of effective policing, also noting that violators of the measure would face their vehicles impounded and also face the wrath of the law.
Motorists were advised to regularise their vehicle documentation and ensure that number plates are correctly affixed, clearly visible and fully compliant with legal requirements.
The command further stressed that officers involved in the operation have been directed to conduct themselves professionally throughout the exercise.
Commissioner of Police Ali Fage was quoted as directing Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to enforce the operation strictly while maintaining respect for members of the public.
“No officer is permitted to engage in extortion, intimidation or harassment during the enforcement exercise. Any misconduct will attract appropriate disciplinary measures,” the command stated.
The initiative follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at enhancing internal security and improving crime detection nationwide.
The police also urged residents to report suspicious vehicles and any alleged misconduct by officers through designated complaint channels, assuring the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
Police expressed confidence that the exercise would contribute to improved public safety, strengthen crime-fighting efforts and promote compliance with vehicle registration laws across the state.
