Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to assume duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador, marking a transition from overseeing one of the country’s most sensitive domestic institutions to a key diplomatic posting.
He was received at the Hamad International Airport by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signalling Qatar’s formal acceptance of his appointment.
The reception also featured 13 African ambassadors, alongside the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Dr Philip Mshelbila, and the President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
The presence of such a wide diplomatic and professional delegation underscored Nigeria’s importance to Qatar and the expectations surrounding Yakubu’s new assignment.
His posting to Doha is seen as a strategic diplomatic role rather than a ceremonial retirement, with Nigeria seeking to deepen relations with Qatar in areas such as energy, investment, geopolitics, and diaspora engagement.
Energy cooperation is expected to be a major focus, as both countries are leading gas producers. Nigeria and Qatar are also key members of global gas platforms, and Yakubu is expected to align Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” agenda with Qatari expertise and investment opportunities.
A major task will be developing mutually beneficial liquefied natural gas strategies that attract Qatari investment into Nigeria’s energy infrastructure without creating market competition between both countries.
Beyond energy, Yakubu is also expected to help drive foreign direct investment into Nigeria as the country implements key economic reforms, including foreign exchange unification and subsidy removal. The Qatar Investment Authority, which manages over $500 billion in assets, is seen as a potential source of significant investment in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, real estate, and digital infrastructure.
Working with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar, Yakubu is expected to strengthen consular services, protect Nigerian citizens, and develop structured channels for diaspora remittances to support domestic development.
Having spent years managing electoral processes at home, Yakubu now faces the task of delivering tangible diplomatic and economic outcomes on the international stage.
Yakubu, who completed his tenure as INEC Chairman last year, was among a list of ambassadorial nominees announced by President Bola Tinubu in a recent round of diplomatic appointments that attracted significant public attention.
