The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a final-year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, during a robbery attack in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased, identified simply as Timi, was reportedly shot by suspected armed robbers who invaded the Konigba area of Ago-Iwoye, a community largely inhabited by students.
Sources said the assailants raided about seven houses, making away with mobile phones, laptops, cash and other valuables belonging to the students.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said police operatives responded promptly after receiving a distress report and had since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the tragic death of an Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) student who was shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye.
“Investigation is ongoing, while the Command commiserates with the family of the deceased and the OOU community, and prays that the deceased’s soul rests in perfect peace,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the university management declared Thursday a lecture-free day following the student’s killing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, urged students to remain calm, assuring them that the university was working closely with the Ogun State Police Command and other security agencies to safeguard lives and property within the university community.
He also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening security through sustained collaboration with relevant security agencies.
