FRSC Secures Conviction as Offender Gets Two Months Jail, ₦300,000 Fine
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured a significant legal victory in its resolve to protect personnel carrying out lawful enforcement duties, following the conviction of one Nasiru Usman by an Asokoro Magistrate Court in Abuja.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, June 11, His Worship Oniyangi convicted Usman for assaulting FRSC Marshals while they were performing statutory responsibilities. The Court sentenced him to two months imprisonment and ordered him to pay ₦300,000 as compensation to the victims.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on June 9 at Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, where Usman, arrested for traffic offences including failure to cover unstable materials and dangerous driving, violently resisted enforcement procedures.
Investigations revealed he attempted to forcefully remove his impounded truck from FRSC custody and assaulted two Marshals with a stone, causing injuries that required medical attention.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the Judiciary for its swift dispensation of justice, describing the ruling as “a clear affirmation that attacks on public officers carrying out lawful duties constitute serious offences against the State and will be met with the full weight of the law.”
He reiterated FRSC’s commitment to professionalism, civility, and respect for human rights in enforcement operations, but warned that violence, intimidation, or obstruction against personnel would not be tolerated.
“Grievances arising from enforcement activities should be pursued through established legal and administrative channels rather than through acts of aggression,” Mohammed stressed.
