FRSC, NHIA Explore Partnership to Link Health Insurance With Driver Records
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has proposed a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to integrate health insurance information into driver’s licence and vehicle registration records, aimed at improving emergency healthcare access for road traffic crash victims.
Director-General of NHIA, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, made the proposal during a courtesy visit to the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed.
He explained that the initiative would facilitate prompt identification of crash victims’ health insurance status and eliminate bureaucratic delays in accessing emergency medical services.
“This will ensure victims receive timely medical attention without financial constraints at the point of rescue and treatment,” Ohiri said.
Welcoming the proposal, Corps Marshal Mohammed commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Ohiri, describing him as “a round peg in a round hole.”
He noted that FRSC clinics nationwide are accredited healthcare facilities and highlighted the establishment of FRSC Health Maintenance Limited, designed to integrate the road transport ecosystem into affordable healthcare coverage.
Mohammed disclosed that FRSC’s database of over 12 million registered drivers could be leveraged to make health insurance enrollment an integral part of driver’s licence acquisition and renewal.
“Such collaboration would guarantee enhanced safety, improved access to emergency medical care, and prompt treatment of crash victims irrespective of their financial status at the point of rescue,” he said.
He further expressed readiness to work with NHIA on incorporating health insurance details into passenger manifests and other transport documentation to strengthen emergency response mechanisms.
Highlighting FRSC’s longstanding commitment to post-crash care, Mohammed recalled that the Corps was the first organisation in Nigeria to establish dedicated ambulance services and roadside clinics along crash-prone corridors.
