The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified a nationwide campaign to reduce crashes involving tankers and trailers through stricter regulatory enforcement, technology-driven safety measures, driver certification and stakeholder- collaboration.
The Corps said its flagship Safe-to-Load programme, introduced in 2015, has transformed safety standards in the petroleum haulage sector by ensuring that only roadworthy tankers and professionally certified drivers transport petroleum products and other hazardous cargo.
A press statement issued by the Corps spokesperson, Osondu Ohaeri in Abuja, Monday, said the compliance with mandatory Class G driver’s licence for tanker drivers increased from 58.2 per cent in 2015 to 99.4 per cent by the end of 2025, reflecting sustained enforcement and stronger collaboration with industry stakeholders.
The statement quoted the Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed as saying that the initiative was designed to create a safer operating environment for tankers conveying petroleum products.
It said the improved licensing compliance has contributed to enhanced road safety, reduced operational risks and greater professionalism within the haulage industry.
He also disclosed that implementation of the Safe-to-Load programme contributed to a 61.29 per cent reduction in fatalities and a 15.53 per cent decline in the crash severity index involving tanker operations in 2025.
To strengthen preventive measures, FRSC has also institutionalised post crash investigations to identify the causes of tanker and trailer crashes.
Findings from the investigations are used to guide policy reviews, enforcement operations and public safety campaigns.
The Corps maintained that sustaining the reduction in tanker and trailer crashes would require continuous enforcement, improved transport infrastructure and stronger collaboration among government agencies, transport operators and other stakeholders to safeguard lives, property and economic activities across the country.
