The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian citizens who were detained in Côte d’Ivoire over allegations relating to economic crimes after months of diplomatic engagement between both countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesman, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
Four released first, two regain freedom later
According to the ministry, four of the detained Nigerians were released on June 22, 2026, while the remaining two regained their freedom on June 23, 2026.
It explained that the successful resolution of the matter followed sustained diplomatic efforts by Nigerian officials and authorities in Côte d’Ivoire.
The ministry noted that the release came after months of continuous engagement aimed at ensuring the safe return of the affected Nigerians.
Embassy commended for intervention
The ministry attributed the successful outcome largely to the consistent intervention of the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.
It said the embassy, under the leadership of Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, maintained regular engagement with relevant institutions in Côte d’Ivoire throughout the detention period.
The Federal Government commended the ambassador and officials of the Nigerian mission for their commitment, professionalism and persistence in handling the matter.
According to the statement, the embassy’s sustained communication with the Ivorian authorities played a key role in resolving the issue through diplomatic channels.
Nigeria appreciates Côte d’Ivoire
The ministry also expressed appreciation to the government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation and support during the diplomatic process.
It noted that the cordial bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire played a significant role in ensuring the issue was resolved peacefully.
According to the ministry, the outcome reflects the strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect shared by both countries.
The government expressed optimism that the cooperation between both nations would continue to strengthen in areas of mutual interest.
FG reaffirms commitment to citizens abroad
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, the Federal Government said protecting the rights, dignity and well-being of its citizens abroad remains one of its key priorities.
The ministry stressed that it would continue to work through diplomatic channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerians wherever they reside.
It added that the government remains committed to ensuring that Nigerians living overseas receive the necessary support and protection whenever the need arises.
According to the statement, the Federal Government remains firmly committed to protecting the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad while strengthening diplomatic relations with countries hosting Nigerian communities.
