The Federal Government on Monday commenced another round of mass trials of suspected terrorists facing terrorism-related charges, relocating proceedings from Kainji, Niger State, to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, is leading the prosecution, while the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Abubakar, is heading the defence team.
The trial, which began across multiple courtrooms at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, had no fewer than 58 suspects arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite.
Some of those in attendance include Abba Bukar, Abba Manye, Gujja Mala Bukar, Brem Gonimi, Isa Mohammed, Lawali Dashiri Danke, Yau Tukur (Mai-Auduga), and Bello Liman, also known as Bell Doctor.
Addressing journalists, Fagbemi explained that the relocation was based on logistical considerations, noting that Abuja offers better infrastructure and more courtrooms to accommodate the large number of suspects and ongoing proceedings.
“Whether the cases are tried in Kainji or Maiduguri, those to try terrorism suspects are judges of the Federal High Court. It is more convenient here; we have more courtrooms and facilities,” he said.
The mass trial reflects the government’s continued effort to address terrorism through judicial processes, balancing the demands of justice with operational and security challenges.
For many observers, the proceedings underscore both the scale of the threat and the authorities’ determination to dismantle criminal networks through the rule of law.
