At least 55 persons have been killed and others severely injured after an explosion incident in Myanmar.
The victims died after the explosives stored by a rebel army detonated, injuring 75 people as well as destroying properties at the scene.
The tragedy happened at Kaung Tat village yesterday around noon, sending a mushroom cloud into the sky and destroying much of the village, near the Chinese border, as confirmed by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the area,
TNLA, on Monday, held that the facilityb had been used for storing explosives for use in mining operations.
Residents described scenes as horrific. A witness, Moe Z said: “Everything was completely destroyed beyond recognition. It’s as if the entire village has just vanished.”
A local journalist added: “Over half of the village’s houses have been destroyed, not even the house posts remain.”
TNLA spokesperson, Lway YO, said that more than 200 homes were damaged, pledging accountability, rescue efforts, and rehabilitation over the incident.
Myanmar’s mineral resources, including rare earths, remain vital revenue sources for both the military-backed government and rebel groups amid the civil war that began after the 2021 coup.
