The Edo State Government has approved the reopening of schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area that were shut earlier in the week over security concerns.
The schools, Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School, were closed on Wednesday following intelligence reports from the Department of State Services suggesting possible threats targeting students.
The development followed days of tension after a suspect was arrested during surveillance operations near Makeke Secondary School, prompting concerns over a planned mass abduction of schoolchildren.
In a Friday circular, the government announced that academic activities would resume on Monday, June 15, 2026, following a comprehensive security review by relevant agencies and stakeholders.
According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the decision was taken after the deployment of enhanced security measures across the affected communities and schools.
“Following the implementation of enhanced security measures and the deployment of additional safety mechanisms across the affected communities and schools, the government is satisfied that necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of learners, teachers, and other school personnel,” she said.
Otamere added that candidates sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would continue their examinations under special security arrangements.
She urged school heads, proprietors, and education authorities to work closely with security agencies and community leaders to sustain safety in schools.
The Commissioner further assured parents and guardians that adequate measures had been deployed, stressing that the government remained fully committed to protecting lives and property while monitoring the situation closely.
