THE Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Ahmed Sanusi has called for professionalism, discipline and integrity among operatives of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
Sanusi made the call on Monday in Abuja at the inauguration of the command’s VCRU.
He warned that no form of misconduct, abuse of authority, intimidation, harassment, extortion, or extrajudicial use of power would be tolerated under any circumstance.
”To the personnel of this newly inaugurated unit, I wish to remind you that this responsibility comes with enormous expectation.
”The trust reposed in you by the command and the public must not be taken lightly and so, you must conduct yourselves with the highest level of professionalism, discipline, restraint, and integrity.
”You are expected to operate in accordance with established laws, police regulations, human rights principles, and globally accepted policing standards.
”Anyone who chooses to drag the name and image of the Nigerian Police Force into disrepute through unprofessionalism and unprofessional conduct will be identified, sanctioned, and dealt with in accordance with established regulations,” he said.
He added that the unit must be known for its effectiveness, accountability, and professionalism.
The CP noted that security could not succeed through the efforts of security agencies alone, but through collective action, collaboration, and mutual trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities.
”I therefore call on residents of the FCT to continue to support the police through timely information sharing and cooperation. Your vigilance and trust remain one of our greatest assets,” he said.
He also said that the inauguration of the VCRU in the command was in line with the commitment of the command to strengthen public safety and improve response to emerging security challenges.
Sanusi said the VCRU was a specialised intervention unit established by the Inspector-General of Police (I-G) to confront violent crime and strengthen operational effectiveness across commands nationwide.
”The creation of this unit reflects the commitment of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force towards proactively addressing threats.
”The unit is a specialised intervention unit, focused on combating violent crime, organised criminal activities, and other serious crimes that require specialised response.
”Within the FCT command, this unit has been strategically structured into five operational sectors to ensure broader coverage, faster response, effective capability, and improved intelligence gathering,” he said.
The CP further explained that the sectorial structure was designed to ensure that no area was left vulnerable and that policing services remain proactive, visible, and responsive.
He said that officers and men in the unit were carefully selected, screened, and rigorously trained for the assignment.
