An Asokoro Magistrate Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a motorist, Nasiru Usman, for assaulting officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while they were carrying out their lawful duties.
The court sentenced Usman to two months’ imprisonment and ordered him to pay N300,000 as compensation to the injured officers after finding him guilty of attacking FRSC Marshals during an enforcement operation.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Magistrate Oniyangi held that the defendant’s actions amounted to a serious offence against public officers performing statutory duties.
The case stemmed from an incident on June 9, 2026, at Dutse Alhaji in Abuja, where Usman was arrested for traffic violations, including dangerous driving and failure to properly secure unstable materials being transported in his truck.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the defendant violently resisted arrest during the enforcement exercise and later attempted to forcibly remove his impounded vehicle from the Corps’ facility.
In the course of the confrontation, he allegedly attacked two Marshals with a stone, leaving them injured and requiring medical attention.
Following his arrest and arraignment, the prosecution tendered evidence which the court found credible, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
Reacting to the judgment, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, commended the judiciary for the swift dispensation of justice, describing the ruling as a strong deterrent against assaults on public officers performing lawful duties.
He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to professionalism, civility and respect for human rights in enforcement operations, while stressing that violence, intimidation and obstruction of FRSC personnel would not be tolerated.
He also advised motorists and members of the public to channel grievances through established legal and administrative processes rather than resorting to confrontation or violence.
