NIGERIA’s Rugby Sevens team, the Stallions, have been drawn in pool A alongside South Africa, Zambia and hosts Mauritius for the 2026 Rugby Africa Sevens Championship .
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament is scheduled to hold from June 20 and June 21 in Cascavelle, Mauritius.
The draw sets up one of the most anticipated matches of the competition, with Nigeria facing South Africa, one of the most successful rugby sevens nations in Africa and the world.
The Stallions will also take on hosts Mauritius and Zambia as they seek a place in the knockout stage of the continental championship.
The clash against South Africa is expected to be a major test for the Nigerian side, providing an opportunity for the team to measure its progress against one of the giants of the sport.
In spite of the diplomatic tensions that have existed between Nigeria and South Africa in recent years, attention in Mauritius will be focused on the sporting rivalry as both teams battle for points in Pool A.
Nigeria will be hoping to make a strong impression at the tournament and improve on its performance from the previous edition, where the Stallions finished seventh overall.
At the last championship, Nigeria reached the quarter-finals before suffering defeat to Kenya. The team, however, ended its campaign on a positive note, recording two victories from six matches.
NAN reports that the Rugby Africa Sevens Championship is regarded as one of the continent’s biggest rugby events and attracts some of Africa’s best teams competing for continental honours.
Meanwhile, Pool B comprises Ghana, Tunisia, Madagascar and Senegal. Senegal was drafted into the tournament following Uganda’s withdrawal.
Uganda pulled out after concerns over an Ebola outbreak, following reports that some members of its delegation tested positive for the virus, although no player was reported to have been affected.
Pool C also promises exciting contests, with Zimbabwe, Kenya, Morocco and Madagascar drawn together in a group filled with experienced and highly competitive teams.
For Nigeria, the championship presents another opportunity to continue its development in the sport and demonstrate its growing strength on the African rugby scene.
The Stallions will be aiming to produce improved performances, secure a place in the latter stages of the competition and strengthen their position among Africa’s emerging rugby nations.
