The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State Chapter, has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures, suspend late-night activities, and fence their premises in response to rising cases of abduction and kidnapping.
The directive was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi, and issued in Ibadan on Wednesday.
In the statement, CAN urged churches to deploy trained security personnel and install electronic surveillance systems strategically within their premises and surrounding environments to safeguard worshippers.
It explained that the measures became necessary due to the increasing cases of abduction and kidnapping in recent times across the state.
“Due to incessant abduction and kidnapping in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security conscious by positioning security personnel and other electronic devices strategically within their premises and neighbourhood,” the communiqué stated.
The association further advised churches without perimeter fencing and gates to prioritise their construction as part of immediate security upgrades.
It also recommended the suspension of late-night church activities, warning against unnecessary exposure to security risks. CAN added that strangers should no longer be allowed to sleep within church premises, while security personnel and essential staff should undergo proper screening.
The directive comes amid heightened insecurity in Oyo State, following a series of abductions, including the recent incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
CAN also urged churches to comply with Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive banning commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m., as part of broader efforts to improve security in the state.
“Churches should intensify prayers for the release of abductees and suspend late-night activities due to the prevailing security situation in the state,” the association added.
The body expressed sympathy with families of victims currently in captivity and commended government efforts aimed at securing their release.
It further pledged continued collaboration with relevant authorities to promote peace, unity, and stability in Oyo State, while calling for urgent action to ensure the safe return of abducted persons to their families.
