Croatia boosted their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage with a 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, earning their first points in Group L and eliminating their opponents from the tournament.
Substitute Ante Budimir scored the decisive goal nine minutes into the second half, calmly converting Josip Stanisic’s low cross after Croatia made two attacking changes at halftime following a lacklustre opening period.
The win leaves Croatia firmly in contention for a place in the last 32, with victory over Ghana on Saturday guaranteeing qualification. Ghana earlier played out a goalless draw with England, keeping Group L finely balanced heading into the final round of matches.
Panama threatened throughout the contest and caused problems with their pace in attack, particularly during the first half. However, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic produced a string of important saves after the break to preserve his side’s lead.
The victory also marked a memorable milestone for captain Luka Modric, whose 200th international appearance ended in triumph. The 40-year-old midfielder, playing in his fifth World Cup, completed 88% of his passes before being substituted in the 81st minute.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic praised his captain after the match, saying Modric continues to influence games despite his age and remains a vital part of the national team.
