Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office over what he described as poor leadership, worsening insecurity, and growing economic hardship across the country.
Obi made the call on Monday in a strongly-worded statement shared via his official X account, where he accused the Tinubu administration of failing to meet expectations and deliver on major campaign promises.
The former Anambra State governor said his position was influenced by recent political developments in the United Kingdom, particularly the resignation announcement made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to Obi, Starmer’s decision reflects the kind of accountability that should exist in democratic systems, especially when leaders fail to meet public expectations.
“As a keen observer of global politics, my primary interest lies in examining what successful nations do right and the structural factors that cause others to lag or struggle with governance and development,” Obi said.
Obi noted that Starmer’s resignation followed increasing public frustration over economic difficulties, rising living costs, and growing dissatisfaction with unfulfilled promises.
Drawing comparisons with Nigeria’s political history, Obi recalled how Tinubu had, in the past, openly demanded the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and governance failures.
He specifically referenced the period following the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, when Tinubu strongly criticized Jonathan’s administration.
“During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives,” Obi stated.
Obi said the same standard of accountability Tinubu once demanded from others should now apply to his own administration.
The opposition figure also revisited promises made by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign. According to him, Nigerians were assured of better electricity supply, stronger anti-corruption efforts, improved security, and enhanced welfare.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply. He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments,” Obi said.
Obi, however, argued that the reality on ground tells a different story.
He said Nigerians are currently facing worsening hardship, persistent power challenges, and growing insecurity in many parts of the country.
According to him, kidnappings and violent attacks remain a major concern, while millions of citizens continue to struggle under harsh economic conditions.
“At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” he said.
Obi further alleged that key sectors of the economy have continued to decline, including transportation, infrastructure, and public service delivery.
He also claimed that anti-corruption efforts under the current administration have not produced the expected results.
Based on these concerns, Obi said he believes Tinubu should step aside in the interest of national accountability and democratic responsibility.
“I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi said.
He maintained that resignation under such circumstances should not be seen as weakness, but as an important step toward strengthening democratic values and public trust.
According to Obi, such a move would help build a political culture where leaders are held responsible for their actions and performance in office.
