Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has expressed confidence that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface can rediscover his top form at the club.
Boniface returned to Leverkusen after an unsuccessful loan spell at Werder Bremen, where he struggled to make a major impact due to fitness issues.
The forward is now expected to work on his recovery as he prepares for the new season.
Injury problems affected Bremen spell
The Nigeria international spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Werder Bremen after a permanent move to Italian giants AC Milan failed to happen.
During his time with Bremen, Boniface made only 11 appearances as knee problems limited his involvement.
The club later decided against activating the option to sign him permanently, leading to his return to Leverkusen.
Rolfes believes striker can improve
Rolfes said Leverkusen’s priority is helping Boniface regain his best physical condition.
He explained that the striker’s knee situation has improved but added that fitness and weight management remain areas to address.
The sporting director believes getting Boniface back to his previous level could reopen opportunities for the forward.
Boniface prepares for Leverkusen return
Boniface is expected to join Leverkusen’s pre-season training next week as the club begins preparations for the upcoming campaign.
The striker still has two years remaining on his contract with the former Bundesliga champions.
The club will hope the Nigerian forward can return to the form that previously made him one of Europe’s most exciting attackers.
